Accessibility

Last updated 10 August 2026 — the low-contrast heading listed here at first publication has been fixed.

What we are aiming at

This site is built against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA. It is partially conformant: most of the standard is met, and the places it is not are listed below rather than left for you to discover.

What works

  • Every control is a real button or link, so everything can be reached and used with a keyboard alone — including the menu, the FAQ, and the photo deck.
  • The photo deck can be dragged, but it never has to be: it has a Next photo button and responds to the arrow keys, and it announces which photo you are on.
  • Focus indicators are visible on every control and are drawn in a colour that contrasts with whatever is behind them — navy on the light half of the page, yellow-green on the dark bands.
  • If your device is set to reduce motion, it is respected everywhere: the opening animation is skipped, the scroll effects are switched off, and the photo deck stops springing. Nothing is lost by turning it on.
  • Nothing moves, flashes, or plays on a loop that you cannot stop, and there is no audio or video.
  • The page has proper landmarks and headings, a skip link, and alternative text on every image.
  • Body text is 16px or larger, and the page reflows down to a 320px screen without a horizontal scrollbar.
  • There are no time limits anywhere.
  • The oversized background headings — "This is a Friday" on the main page, and the 404 on the error page — are set light on purpose, but light enough to still be read. They were measured, not guessed.

Known problems

These are real, and they are ours to fix:

  • The site has not been tested with a screen reader on real hardware, and has not been audited by anyone independent. It has only been checked with automated tools and by hand.
  • Some of the writing is still placeholder text while the club finalises it, so parts of the page do not yet read as plain, finished English.
  • One scroll transition on large screens holds the page still for a moment as it plays. It is switched off entirely if you have reduced motion turned on, but with motion on it briefly takes the scroll out of your hands.

Telling us something is wrong

If any part of this site gets in your way, please tell us — including which page, what you were trying to do, and what device or assistive technology you were using. Problems reported this way get fixed faster than problems found in an audit, and you do not need to know the technical name for what went wrong.

BLOCKED — before this page is published This statement needs a contact route of its own: an email address or number that a reader can use to report a barrier, plus a realistic answer to how long a reply takes. Both are still blocked on the main site's contact details.
